TILE MURALS

Students create a meaningful visual statement for all to enjoy.

Tiles in clay transform two-dimensions into a three dimensional form, rich with color, design, and symbolism. Tiles tell stories, the oldest form of human communication. Tiles challenge the student to think off the page. Groups collaborate on a theme, story or metaphor.

A student group project can be displayed in a showcase or become a permanent mural installation. Students and families take pride in viewing their work displayed as an architectural element in hallways and showcases throughout the school or may be framed for home.

Tile Mural Legacy Project

The tile mural program is particularly challenging and creates a great sense of accomplishment—from conception to completion. Sometimes I work with a graduating class to create a legacy tile mural. Students each contribute an individual tile allowing them to experience the full range of the ceramic process.

Each student is responsible for creating a one-of-a-kind low relief 6” x 6” tile —painting and preparing it for the firing.  They learn to transform a hand-drawn design that comes alive in a relief tile.

Tile Mural Themes

Design themes may tie into the school’s curriculum. Themes have included memorials, a celebration of nature, multicultural diversity, environmental issues. Finished tile murals may be installed in a building or courtyard.

For example, a rainforest theme could include elements from the curriculum from the science, social studies/geography; and those of global climate change.

The Native American tile mural theme could include native tribe’s respect for nature, sustainability, and cycles of nature and illustrate how their rich geometric patterns and symbols are such an integral part of the art and culture.

Some murals incorporate poetry or prose to instill a literary element to the project.
